    I'm a 60 y/o male who can related to passing. I feel Jame's Johnson love for learning from his mother was instrumental in his development to achieve all that is possible. Most white men in the South could careless fathering a bunch mixed children like my dad who passed away last year at 88 y/o & my ggfather who was a slave until 12 y/o. They never knew who their father was. Also Jame's lived a up-scale life in Connecticut 1910 with the help of his father. Unlike my moms family in Southside, VA they were all blackred necks with racial attitudes of southern confederate democrats.

    i've only just yesterday read the book but i am INFATUATED with it. i'm always keen on lipogrammic writing, i find it to prove a challenge and only brings out creativity, and this novel turns that up to 11! this may be the most immersed in a story i felt, no less than thanks due to me having my own pangrammic sentence (x quickly zapped j with five big mirrors, blinding him.) and saw how i would rewrite it if those restrictions were to fall upon me.

    If you want to understand Western civilization, you must read the Bible for three reasons: it is a magnificent book about Judeo-Christian theology and its principles, values, virtues, and institutions; it is a superb literary work; and it provides a magnificent historical account of an incredible time in human history.

    I started watching RUclips in 2015. I made videos for several years but then it started feeling like a lot of work for little reward so I quit in like 2022. But I still love watching Booktube. It and reading are my two hobbies. I pay for RUclips premium and even with the recent price increase I think it worth it because I don’t have Netflix or anything like that.

    • @1book1review
      @1book1review 13 дней назад

      I keep wondering about Premium, but I mostly don't mind the ads so much. It annoys me that they show ads on channels (like mine) that are not viable for monetization anymore. I would get premium when they money you pay would go to the channels you watch, but as far as I know that's not happening. Nothing about this is perfect, so glad though that you are still watching and enjoying booktube, even after you stopped making videos.

    I recently did a re-read of this after reading it 30 years ago. I had forgotten that it doesn't really follow "Gen X" as we know them; the characters are a bit older -- maybe a gap generation between boomers and X. In my late teens, this was a fun, cynical look into what living an "alternative" lifestyle would be like. In my early 50s, I found it wanting, especially the ending. Some of the glossary words used then could be used today. Read it, and see what you think.

    Juan Pablo Villalobos is a writer who is unfortunately still far too unknown for the way he likes to write. Because his books are simply magnificently different and absolutely lovable (if one can and should speak of lovability in connection with objects). In his own way, he is to the Spanish-language book what Pedro Almodovar is to the Spanish-language film.

    Please do not false-equalise actions of David with the actions of the trio and Petras. It's like saying that slapping someone in the face is in the same league as beating someone almost to death with metal rods. Yes, both are bad, but we cannot be so utterly bereft of nuance. Also, David did not "get away with what he was doing": he lost his job, he lost his pension, he was beaten and burned alive, his child was raped, he had to accept that he is powerless to help or even avenge her, he could no longer sleep with women he desired, his daughter forsaken him, his grandchild will be a child of rape, he lost his family, he lost absolutely everything. What worse can possibly happen to a man? I would not wish this on my worst enemy. He surely paid for his crimes.

    So you ended May on a high. Awesome. I hope that continues through the summer. Congratulations on the half marathon. Also, that looks like a beautiful, big park to ride or hike in.

    I think one of the ideas of this book is that when going through difficult trials in life, love (Beatrice) and common sense (Virgil) can help us. The end of the book makes us wonder whether we will be able to preserve our human appearance on the brink of life and death. Reading people who went through the Holocaust Edith Eger and Viktor Frankl we understand that this is so. Dante left us a kind of guide

    To me, it was a nice book and I liked it, Hank’s narration of the stories was great, I mean the audiobook, its first story was the best in the whole collection,

    This explanation is exactly the opposite of what the book said. The author was mourning the death of Canada. Which is entirely appropriate. That land will become a nature preserve.
